(Issued over the covered company team net.) "Our mission is to seize and hold the Martinstraus bridge, so it can be used by the 1st Marine Division in its attack on enemy north of Stony River. We've encountered enemy security forces to our front and left flank. My plan is to destroy those forces and continue our advance towards Martinstraus.
"LAR Platoon: Move around the south of Hill 327 to its east side. Engage enemy rear and left flank.
"2d Platoon Tanks: Move to a battle position on the north slope of Hill 175 and engage the enemy on Hill 327; cover the LAR Platoon's movement.
"lst Platoon Tanks: Take up a battle position on the southern slope of Hill 376. Provide a base of fire for 3d Platoon and Infantry enveloping the enemy on Hill 350.
"3d Platoon Tanks: Move northwest along the dirt road around Hill 350. At the western edge of Hill 350, move onto the hill and establish a base of fire to the enemy's right flank.
"Infantry: Move along the dirt road and envelop around the north side of Hill 350. Attack the enemy rear area.
"FO: Get me a standing barrage of variable time fuzed high explosives (HE) on target reference points (TRPs) A and B. I also need smoke on TRPs C and D.
"FAC: Get our Cobras in the air. Direct them to the enemy positions on Hills 327 and 350."
In addition, I would, of course, report the contact to higher head quarters and report on how we intended to counter it.
I believe my company team is facing BTR or BRDM armored vehicles without significant antitank capabilities. Based on this, I thought of by-passing the enemy force and letting my direct support Cobras deal with the threat posed by his security outposts. However, I decided against having an enemy force to my rear.
Instead of dealing with one enemy position at a time, I decided to launch what may be termed a double outflanking maneuver and attack both enemy positions. My intent is to destroy both enemy positions with these offensive strokes. Speed and shock effect will carry this engagement. As the enemy positions on Hills 327 and 350 are mutually supporting, attacking them simultaneously obviously makes sense.
HE artillery fires should disrupt and possibly neutralize some of the enemy armor. The artillery delivered smoke will obstruct enemy vision and help my maneuver elements move unhindered. The smoke will not hinder the ability of my M1A1s to fire using their thermal sights.
I cannot afford to lose my forward momentum. The attacks on both enemy positions must be executed quickly and decisively. After destroying the enemy force, we must quickly regroup and continue our mission.
