Squad Leader's Order

"Machinegun Squad Leader: Move your gun right and link up with 2d Fire Team. Place your fires on the enemy's leftmost position.

"1st and 3d Fire Team Leaders: Follow me along the creek bed to the left. We will assault the enemy's left position from the flank.

"Yellow smoke signals shift fire; green signals cease fire."

Estimate of Situation

Mission: Our mission is to provide security to the company's front. The company is the battalion's vanguard on the move north. Our focus of effort is the destruction of the enemy.

Enemy: The enemy employs hit and run tactics. He will withdraw if pressured. In order to destroy him, he must be fixed so that he cannot withdraw. He is in platoon strength and on ground he knows. His positions provide support to his front but not to the flanks.

Terrain and Weather: The creek bed and forested areas allow us to work towards the enemy's flanks. They also offer the enemy escape routes. The open areas to his front must be avoided as they are his kill zone.

Troops and Fire Support Available: The platoon is close behind. They can rapidly reinforce us. They will also have the radio and be able to bring at least the 81mms in support of us.

Time: Time is on the enemy's side. He has initiated the engagement and will withdraw when he pleases unless we can interfere. It will take a number of minutes to move the rest of the platoon up, brief a frag order, and execute it.

Space: All the action is occurring well within the small arms range of both sides' weapons. The platoon should be able to cover the 400 meters rapidly.

Logistics: Not applicable.

Explanation

Our mission is to provide security to the company's front. But we know that we are intent on destroying the enemy. In order to destroy him he must be fixed. Given the time it will take for the platoon to come up, deploy, and act, the enemy may very well disengage. It is up to me to immediately take measures toward holding the enemy in place so the platoon and company can destroy him. I will move rapidly against what I feel is his most exposed position. By closing with him, I can hold him in place.
